More Wind Power By Lasers

Wind farms use anemometers on their turbines to determine wind direction and speed. The readings from these devices allow the turbines to automatically adjust their pitch and orientation of their blades to prevent wind gust damage and maximize wind power output.

However, the anemometers only measure the wind as it arrives leaving a slight delay for the wind turbines to adjust. A company called Catch the Wind, Inc. has produced a new LIDAR system, which sends out energy pulses (laser beams) up to 1000 meters away to take readings on dust particles in the wind.

By knowing the direction and speed of the wind that is heading towards the wind turbines, it can make the necessary adjustments to be more energy efficient, which is estimated to be a 10% boost in wind power output. The lasers are NOT harmful to eyes or wildlife.

Buy Green Power In Your City

The U.S. government has setup a website that allows people to find any green power options within their state. The Green Power Network will show all utility companies that offer green power programs to their customers (the website contains a map - click on your state of residence - see renewable power options available to you).

Utility companies may offer renewable power at a slight extra fee. Funding alternative power sources is good overall as we move away from harmful carbon emissions-producing power sources. The more money pumped into green power, the more readily available it becomes across the globe. Find out if your utility company offers a cleaner power source.

Colleges Consider Free Bikes To Students

Here is one way to be green. Some colleges are considering free bicycle giveaways to students that decide to leave their cars at home. Bikes are perfect for travel since college campuses tend to be geographically constrained. Bicycle riding is also a cheaper form of transportation than a car (no gasoline required) and is healthier for the student (exercise) and Earth (no pollution).

One of the advantages of bike riding is the reduction of alcohol-related auto accidents, which alone should be worth the investment by colleges to push for the free bicycle giveaway. Colleges also benefit by reducing parking needs. Colleges nationwide may catch on to this green incentive for their students.

Future Game Consoles Energy Star Approved?

The Environmental Protection Agency is introducing new energy requirements to game console manufacturers to be used by July 1, 2010. To be Energy Star approved, future game systems will need an auto shut-off feature, wireless access point functionality that requires less than 10 watts of energy, power scaling and a TV/display sleep mode.

So when it comes time to buy the PlayStation 4, Xbox Vista or the Nintendo Wii Wii, you should have a more energy-efficient game console (lowering your electric bill so you can buy more games)!

Reduce Your Junk Mail

Junk mail contributes to global warming. To produce mail that you will probably not read anyway requires trees to be knocked down and probably toxic chemicals to print the message. To help the environment and reduce the junk in your mail, you should sign-up with a company that specializes in reducing clutter from your mailbox.

41pounds.org is a company with a low-fee option ($41 for 5 years) for eliminating most of your junk mail (check out their website for more details). Producing unwanted mail decreases the number of trees that eat carbon emissions pollution. Help do your part by eliminating unnecessary mail.
